Halloween Work

Description:
since halloween i have created three prototype models using google sketchup. i created the first one, a fitness centre, because it would be sustainable both before and after the 2012 olympics and would be in keeping with the government strategies on obesity and fitness. i then designed an entertainment park because derry is seriously lacking in these facilties, which could be used to accomodate the influx of tourists expected. my third design was of a retail park with innovative structures. this would be benefical to tourism and creating jobs as well as making an architectural impact on the citys skyline. i regularly checked the blogs and uploaded all my design screen shots and an outline of the structure.

Evaluation:
i feel that the fitness centre is a good idea but there are already lots of leisure facilties in derry. the work i completed was done to a high standard, although the structure and layout inside the structure was quite basic. i feel the centre could be developed alot more.
the entertainment park, which consisted of a bar/nightclub was also a basic structure, but i tried to use glass wood and concrete together to make it more architecurally advanced. i feel that this idea could be most developed and has the most potential, both in a 3D modelling way and in a real life basis because derry is lacking in this type of structure.
my third idea, a retail park was again quite basic design principles, and derry already has a number of different retail districts. i dont think there is a wide range of design possibilites for a shop because it has to be above all practical, and there is no room for wasted space to make the structure more advanced.

Time Management until Christmas.
i will chose the entertainment complex as my project idea. i will work on the structures in my own time to improve them and develop the idea further. i aim to make a cluster of strcutures in the complex to show different aspects of my skills with google sketchup. i will also use class time more effectively and work to all deadlines.

Prototype 3

my third prototype is a retail park. there would be around 10 units which businesses could rent out from the council. the economical sustainabilty would be enforced here because the business would provide a good or service that the public will buy, therefore increasing the citys revenue and affluence. on the basis of big name companys with high quality goods and services renting the units, more jobs will be created and consumers from other parts of ireland and northern ireland will come to the city. the buildings will all have solar panels and there will be turbines to amkie use of tidal energy form the nearby river foyle. this will cut electricity costs. there will be car parking, tram, bus and monorail stops in the site and local culture will be promoted through the businesses providing a service for the people of the city.

Prototype 2

my second design idea was an entertainment complex on the site. this would include a bar/nightclub, restuarant, cinema, bowling alley, ice rink and small park. i feel that this would fufill the coursework brief by being at the heart of the community, a way for people of all ages to interact in a stimulating and interesting way. the complex would be economically sustainable because of the income generated by all the venues. it would be giving back to the community by allowing charity fundraisers and other community projects to use the facilites for very little charge. there will also be car parking, tram bus and monorail links with the city centre. the actual buildings themselves will use green energy solar panels and water tanks to collect rainfall. local culture will be sustained by the very nature of the complex, an entertainment park which will bring the community together.

Prototype Design 1

My first design idea was a fitness centre. this fufills the coursework brief because the athletes coming from different countries will be able to use the centre to train in preperation for the 2012 olympics. after this time the centre could be used for public use ie, schools, individuals, organisations could make use of the facilites which in my final project will include the gym centre as well as an outdoor pool, race track, rugby and soccer pitches and tennis courts. it is enviornmentally sustainable because after the athletes are finished with it, public membership fees will pay for its build and upkeep. it will have many enviornmentally friendly features such as solar panels and water reseviour tanks which will keep the cost of running the centre down. local culture will be promoted through the training ground i will include for Derry City FC. the transportation links will be modern with bus, monorail and tram stops in the area.

6) Using a TABLE, compare and contrast the features available in these 3 graphics packages:

5) What are the characteristics of the following graphics file formats

Bitmap:
A representation, consisting of rows and columns of dots, of a graphics image in computer memory. The value of each dot (whether it is filled in or not) is stored in one or more bits of data. The resolution of bitmap images, such as digital photographs, depends on both the display device and the inherent resolution of the bitmap image.

GIF?
Known as Graphic Interchange Format. The majority of images on the Web are now in GIF format, and virtually all Web browsers that support graphics can display GIF files. GIF files incorporate a compression scheme to keep file sizes at a minimum, and they are limited to 8-bit (256 or fewer colors) color palettes.
http://webstyleguide.com/graphics/gifs.html

PNG?
A format for graphics that is useful primarily on the World Wide Web. PNG graphics can contain millions of colors and can be transparent, and are compressed without degradation of the image. However, many Web browsers can not display them. It supports alpha channels and has a and 48 bit true color (as compared to GIF's 8 bit color).

JPEG?
Joint Photographic Experts Group is also used to minimise graphics size, using compression, it is a file format used for good quality photographic reproduction on the Web. JPEG graphics are capable of reproducing a full range of color while still remaining small enough for Web use. Most of the photographs you see on the Web are JPEG format.

XCF?
A GIMP image file format that is unsupported by web browsers. It can save layer information and other information that you may want to use again, e.g. text layer.

PSD?
The suffix or extension used to by Adobe for files created using Adobe Photoshop software. Applications other than Photoshop may also be able to save or open files in this file format.
www.caddpower.com/cms/glossary

SVG?
An XML markup language for describing two-dimensional vector graphics, both static and animated. Can be used both by Web browsers and desktop publishing to produce vector graphics which are very fast and easily transmittable files.

4) What is an alpha channel? How can this be useful in your coursework project?

In computer graphics, alpha compositing is the process of combining an image with a background to create the appearance of partial transparency. this could be useful because we will have to import the design of the building into a picture of the site.

3) What does “RGB” have to do with graphic files?

RGB stands for the colous red, green and blue. Computer monitors use RGB to define the colours that appear on screen. Each color in the RGB combination is measured from 0 - 255. An example would be the colour blue, the RGB combination for this colour would be 0-0-255. http://www.artisan-ds.com/

2) What is the difference between VECTOR and BITMAP graphics? Explain both terms.

vectors are digital images created by placing lines and shapes in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. Some animation images are created as vector files.
www.gslis.utexas.edu/~vlibrary/glossary

bitmap=Representation of a document as an image file in digital form. For black and white images, each bit represents one unit of information. Logical 1 represents black and logical 0 represents white (bitonal). This allocation originates in printing where 1 = true = print black. Other allocations also exist. Gray-level and color information are represented in the same way, whereby the gray or color value of a pixel is defined by several bitmaps.

1) What is a pixel?

Short for picture element, the information stored for a single grid point in the image. The complete image is a rectangular array of pixels.

Johns Homewrk

Good Information adds value to an organisation. It helps decision making as the quality of a decision depends on the quality of information. Decision making is crucial within a business, therefore it is important that the information is accurate, up to date and complete. Information can also show a business how it is doing, performance wise. Information can be used to target resources. Information can also allow a business to gain a competitive advantage. This is because they will be able to compare sales, turnover, profit and losses with their competition.

Teaching Topic

The subject I will teach is quality of information which is about how good the information people recieve is i.e. whether it is relevant, accurate, undersatndable and up to date. I am goin to create a PowerPoint Presentation to teach this subject so that it will be interesting and people will understand it. I will include media such as videos and music to keep interest up and stop people falling asleep. I hope to make everyone get A's in there A Levels by teaching this so i will take it seriously. I will also set a homework that they will do and if they dont do it there goin to get detention / a bad comment.
